Reptiles

If you find a reptile, first determine if it is injured. If the animal is uninjured but in immediate danger, such as in a roadway, you may carefully move it a short distance to a safe area in the direction it was heading. Always use extreme caution around traffic and never put yourself at risk.

Caution: Turtles have sharp claws. All reptiles can bite. Do not pick them up by the tail: IT HURTS! Carry turtles by the rear of the shell or in a container. Reptiles have a very small home range. They should never be relocated to a different environment.

If the reptile appears injured, place it in a secure box or container with air holes, and keep it in a quiet, shaded area away from pets and people. Be sure to note the exact location where the reptile was found and contact our center for guidance. Do not attempt to treat the animal yourself.

Wildlife should NEVER be taken home to be kept as a pet.
